The Competition
|
The NGC aims to provide a professional competition experience that unites students, academia, and industry representatives nationwide, giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves, compete, engage with industry, learn, and apply their skills to real-world problems.
Participating teams are presented with a problem dealing with various aspects of geomatics, and must come up with a solution to the problem. The teams present their solutions in front of a panel of judges, consisting of industrial and academic experts in the industry. |

The History
Founded by geomatics engineering students at the University of New Brunswick, the National Geomatics Competition (NGC) was first held in Fredericton in 2018. The following year, the University of Calgary hosted the event in Alberta, marking significant growth with over 30 participants from various institutions and more than 20 industry partners in attendance. In 2020, the competition was successfully held at the University of Waterloo, further establishing the NGC as a flagship event within the English-speaking geomatics community in Canada.
Following a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NGC returned in 2023 with its first bilingual edition, hosted at Université Laval in Quebec City. In 2024, the event was once again held in Quebec, this time at the Université de Sherbrooke, welcoming over 10 teams. In 2025, the University of Calgary hosted for the second time and provided the largest edition of the competition to date, with 17 teams and over 50 students. Coming into 2026, the NGC will be hosted in Ontario at McMaster University.
